Parliament wasted 45,000 meals last year as tens of thousands of children go hungry across London, an MP has said.

 

New figures that reveal the staggering amount of food waste in the British parliament have prompted calls for MPs to donate their unused meals to those in need.

Shadow Commons Leader Chris Bryant called on the government to give uneaten meals to local food banks in the capital.

“Last year 1.2 million sausages were sent to landfill in Rhondda Cynon Taf alone, which is why it is great that the local council is now signing everybody up to proper food recycling,” the Welsh Labour MP said.

“But new figures show that this House last year wasted 45,000 meals that were just tipped in the bin.
“With 33 Trussell Trust food banks within the M25 and an estimated 70,000 children in London going to bed hungry each night, would it not be time for the leader to institute a new scheme to donate unused food from this palace to local London food banks?”

Shortly after Montenegro’s bid to join the North Atlantic Alliance was given the green light, thousands flooded the streets of the capital to protest the upcoming membership and remind people of lives taken during the NATO invasion of 1999.

Former Montenegrin President Momir Bulatovic and opposition leaders called the rally on Saturday in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica. They gathered at least 5,000 supporters outside the parliament, according to the local Vijesti newspaper. The protesters held national flags while patriotic and pro-Russian chants ringing out from the assembled crowd.

Bulatovic, who was also prime minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1998 to 2000, told the rally that joining NATO would mean “blood of innocent people on our hands,” and emphasized his country had been against the alliance’s wars until recently. “What has Afghanistan done wrong, what has Iraq done wrong? Why has Libya been destroyed, what's happening today in Syria? Can we close our eyes to that?" he said.

Macomb County man David Stojcevski died of drug withdrawal and neglect as officials ignored his plight.

It was a death sentence.

David Stojcevski, a 32-year-old resident of Roseville, Michigan, was arrested for failing to pay a $772 fine stemming from careless driving. A court ordered him to spend a month in the Macomb County jail.

Over the next 17 days of his incarceration in a brightly lit cell—where he was denied clothing—he lost 50 pounds, suffered convulsions, and eventually began to hallucinate. He died in agony, from a combination of obvious, untreated drug withdrawal and galling neglect.

Making matters worse (if anything could be worse than that), the entirety of his demise was captured on jail surveillance footage. Indeed, Stojcevski was under self-harm watch—stemming for a profound misdiagnosis of his condition, which was drug addiction, not mental instability—and jail officials were supposed to be watching him constantly. Either their vigilance was inadequate, or they watched and simply didn’t care.

WDIV's report on the story is a must-see, though it’s highly disturbing: the video shows clips from the jail footage while a medical expert offers commentary on the inhumanity of Stojcevski’s treatment.

Across the United States, many local governments are responding to skyrocketing levels of inequality and the now decades-long crisis of homelessness among the very poor ... by passing laws making it a crime to sleep in a parked car.
This happened most recently in Palo Alto, in California's Silicon Valley, where new billionaires are seemingly minted every month – and where 92% of homeless people lack shelter of any kind. Dozens of cities have passed similar anti-homeless laws. The largest of them is Los Angeles, the longtime unofficial "homeless capital of America", where lawyers are currently defending a similar vehicle-sleeping law before a skeptical federal appellate court. Laws against sleeping on sidewalks or in cars are called "quality of life" laws. But they certainly don't protect the quality of life of the poor.
To be sure, people living in cars cannot be the best neighbors. Some people are able to acquire old and ugly – but still functioning – recreational vehicles with bathrooms; others do the best they can. These same cities have resisted efforts to provide more public toilet facilities, often on the grounds that this will make their city a "magnet" for homeless people from other cities. As a result, anti-homeless ordinances often spread to adjacent cities, leaving entire regions without public facilities of any kind.
Their hope, of course, is that homeless people will go elsewhere, despite the fact that the great majority of homeless people are trying to survive in the same communities in which they were last housed – and where they still maintain connections. Americans sleeping in their own cars literally have nowhere to go.
Indeed, nearly all homelessness in the US begins with a loss of income and an eviction for nonpayment of rent – a rent set entirely by market forces. The waiting lists are years long for the tiny fraction of housing with government subsidies. And rents have risen dramatically in the past two years, in part because long-time tenants must now compete with the millions of former homeowners who lost their homes in the Great Recession.
The paths from eviction to homelessness follow familiar patterns. For the completely destitute without family or friends able to help, that path leads more or less directly to the streets. For those slightly better off, unemployment and the exhaustion of meager savings – along with the good graces of family and friends – eventually leaves people with only two alternatives: a shelter cot or their old automobile.

The Nobel Prize committee has received a petition that endorses awarding the peace prize to US Army Private Bradley Manning, who is convicted of espionage and facing up to 90 years behind bars for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks.
US anti-war activist Normon Soloman, one of the organizers of the petition, gave the 5,000-page document to Nobel committee member Asle Toje on Monday.
However, Toje said the annually awarded US$1 million prize is "not a popularity contest," adding that such campaigns do not influence the Nobel Committee in its choice.
“Remaining in prison and facing relentless prosecution by the US government, no one is more in need of the Nobel Peace Prize,” states the petition, which garnered more than 100,000 signatures.
"No individual has done more to push back against what Martin Luther King Jr. called 'the madness of militarism' than Bradley Manning," the petition reads.

This  photo is  being  circulated as an  example of the  cruelty  of the   Syrian  Rebels being  perpetrated  upon the   Syrian  People.  Far  be it  from  me to   defend  the   Rebels  as  I  believe they  are  murderers  and  terrorists.  Just as  I  believe  the western Countries  funding  them and  arming them  are  murderers  and terrorists.
This photo is  also making the  rounds with  captions insinuating that   it is a  Palestinian  child  being  abused  and  used  by   Israel.  While it  is  extremely  important   for us  to  get the  word  out  and  make  available  all the news  we  are  able .  So  as  to   afford  the   People  an  opportunity  to  understand  all of the truth  , not  just  the part  the   government  and the   MSM  media  would have  them believe.  To use  and  manipulate a  heart  wrenching  photo   for  the  purpose of  furthering an  agenda that has  nothing to do with the  original  photo.  To  use  the   obvious  pain and  suffering this  child  has  had  to  endure captured  so painfully in this  photo.  To  use  this  for  a  personal  agenda  belittles  the  suffering  this innocent  has  had  to   suffer.  Thereby,  making the  person  utilizing  the  image  for   a  personal  agenda  as   guilty  as  those who abuse  her.  How  dare  you  utilize  her  pain and  suffering  to further  whatever  personal  agenda  you  may  have!
You  are  no better than the scum that has  done this to  her.  To  distribute  this  photo without  the truth  behind her  suffering.  Without  the  so  much as  offering an inkling of information as  to what has  happened  to  her.  Anyone  who  has  obtained  this  photo  from  legitimate  sources  would  have  that  information and  would be  able  to  present it.  So far  I  have  found  no one giving  credit  to  the  photographer.  Nor have  they  presented   background  information  on  the   child or  her whereabouts.
